In Defense of 'BAD' Food

We have all heard of the term "let's just call a spade, a spade".
Why do we have such a hard time adopting this mentality when it comes to food?
Why must we defend bad food so adamantly?
You're only defending it for yourself.
Just own it an move on.
If it makes you better, maybe you need it.
I am not the food police, and honestly the choice is yours.
If you must defend it, my judgment wouldn't matter anyway.

I am here to inform and educate those who are willing to listen.
If you are not ready to change, please get out of the way.
You are only clogging it up those of us who want to be better.

Just please,
If you are looking for feedback as to why-
You feel horrible
You're injured all the time
You're fat and out of shape
The conversation will most likely turn to
BAD food.

Marketing at the Market

Spring is in the air... I can feel it, see it and smell it. This is definitely my favorite time of year. Great weather here in Dallas, color is everywhere and the local food choice starts to increase. If you're used to shopping some of the local markets around town, your chance of finding more fresh, local food goes way up, but what about the 'super' market? How do you really know what is best?

On a recent visit to a "natural foods" market near me I picked up a flyer. This isn't one I frequent often so I decided to see what kind of deals they had. Here are some of the words and items they used;

-PREMIUM Fuji Apples & Bartlett Pears
-ON THE VINE Cluster Tomatoes & Fresh Tender Asparagus
-NEW CROP Sweet Onions & Avocados
-ALL NATURAL Chicken Leg Quarters, Ground Beef, Pork Loin Roast, Chicken Tenders
-FRESH Beef Meatloaf
-WILD CAUGHT Cod Filets, King Salmon Filets
-VEGETARIAN FED Chicken Eggs

These are just a few of what I saw in

Day 36 - May 17 - 2010

Really motivated to step up on some of my athletic goals as I realize they will hugely transfer into what I am wanting to achieve aesthetically.

Tested handstand wall press -
KB handstand - PR time held (intensity) -
Ground to standing sit up -
KB leg swing -

35 minutes -

Felt great! Diet is a bit off these days. Food quality is spot on but volume is not. I almost ALWAYS test food, just never the amount. More on that in the future-

Just in time for Thanksgiving -

Interesting article in the Washington Post. Dr. Kessler, former head of the FDA, is really going after food manufacturers and restaurants to label ingredients of restaurant foods. He also talks about his ongoing research in the neurological effects that some foods have.

Why We Crave -

Raw milk...

For those who are a little weary of raw milk this is a great video. Store bought milk is essentially a dead food! It's stripped of ANY benefit and can potentially do the body harm! Do your homework and come see us at The Movement Dallas Co-op for your source...

Organic Foods on a Limited Budget (from Mercola)

For cheap organic food, try your local farmers' market, where you are likely to find organic items available for considerably less than what you pay in the grocery stores. Going to the farmers' market is a great habit to get into anyway, since you'll find wonderful fresh foods and you will help sustain local farmers.

You can also join a food co-operative or buy a "share" of a farm through community supported agriculture (CSA). You get delicious, healthy, organic food at a reasonable cost and help local farmers as well.

Here are some other tips:

  • Stick primarily to unprocessed foods. The price of prepared organic food is steep, but if you eat mostly unprocessed food you will save money.
  • Try the bulk bins. Many regular supermarkets have started carrying bulk organic items, and your local natural food store will probably have an even better selection. Rice, pasta, oatmeal, nuts, etc. are all there and at rock bottom prices.
  • If you have the time, space, and desire, grow your own. Even a row of green beans or a couple of cherry tomato plants on your balcony can provide a lot of food for just a few dollars’ worth of investment in a packet of seeds.
  • Look into joining a natural food co-op in your area. Members take advantage of the idea of bulk buying to get better prices on items.
