Attachment -

This past weekend I had one of the greatest golf games of my life. There are a number of things that this could have potentially been brought on by, but I had clarity and peace like never before. One of the these thoughts was on the idea of attachment. I was thinking of all of the rounds that I have played in the past(I started at about age 9) and what had potentially held me back from being better than before, and it struck me. Golf and LIFE are all about attachment or lack thereof. Let me explain. Golf is very much a mental game. If there is attachment to the last shot then the whole round is potentially a wash due to the fact that you're beating yourself up and are stuck on what you did before. How can you become better if you can't see where you're going?
Life is very much the same in that when we get attached *stuck* in our previous 'shot' then it often washes out everything else that we do. We can no longer see if we are getting better because we are focused on how bad we have been.

Is there a better way>? Test it... why not forget all of our past shots? Of course they are there to learn from, but only in the direction to make us better. If something is not making you better it's time to detach and change.

Enjoy!

Let it go...

Anxiety BeGone -

Do you suffer from low grade anxiety from time to time? If you answered no, you're probably not human... Anxiety is the body telling us we need to do something different, take another action. In that sense, it can be a very good thing, giving us feedback for steps in a new direction. On the other hand, if we get 'stuck' in our anxiety, it can lead to many physical and psychological issues including and not limited to depression and/or obesity. Here is a great article on how to re-direct anxious thoughts and how to create awareness to eliminate them as much as possible...

Can't blame it on genes...

A GREAT article depicting the fact that we can affect our gene expression through our thoughts and actions! I hear it all the time... it's genetic and I can't do anything about it. Well, the first thought I have is 'with that attitude you're more than likely correct'. Studies done in Epigenetics show that it starts with our thoughts and is shaped by our lifestyles (nutrition, stressors etc). We need to have the thought and expectation that WE do have the power to change our intentions!

Sorry guys, no more excuses :0

Buyer beware...

Recent article showing that half of the fish consumed is coming from raised farms...

(FISHIES)

Many do not realize that this is the equivalent to conventional farming and agriculture. These fish are not on a natural diet, but are fed corn and other grain that they are not suited to eat. They are also limited in their 'roaming' space and in the process end up swimming in their own un-washed feces.

We have all been told omega 3's are good for us, and that fish like salmon are loaded with them. Unfortunately, because these fish are not on a natural diet, you're not getting what you're paying for and are potentially setting yourself up for other health hazards. Fatty acids come in different ratios, and when the ratio's are higher as they are in the typical processed diet, then there is a greater chance for inflammation of tissues to occur. The other problem with farmed fish is the amount of PCB's it contains. Better known as Polychlorinated Biphenyl, these known carcinogens are linked to various ill health defects including but not limited to cancer, immune system defects, reproductive and neurological issues. Clearly something I would like to refrain from.

Other lesser known sources of omega 3 fatty acids...

Grass fed beef (The Movement Co-op)
pastured dairy
walnuts
cod liver oil (greener pastures)
flaxseed

Enjoy!

It's ALL Connected...

"The health of your body influences what you experience in your mind. There is no split. If you can engage your whole spirit in the pursuit of total fitness - not just your intellect, not just your emotions - but instead everything inside you that is truly you, you'll discover what it is to be a whole person."

Pardon The Venting...

But I just couldn't hold back! I picked up this clip from the Today Show and couldn't help myself but to respond! I mean, seriously? Please watch the video and decide for yourself, but in my opinion, this is NOT the way to health. I understand the dilemma of 'road eating' but come on. There seems to be a few shameless plugs in there as well.

NO LADY! YOU DON'T GET IT!

-There is absolutely NO regard to food quality! The only thing that seems to be of concern is calories and fiber! Getting healthy and losing weight is NOT about counting calories (IT'S NOT ABOUT CALORIES)and NOT about how much fiber we can pack down. Who wants to do that forever? I don't, and I know that if we focus on 'quality' whole foods then calories don't matter. However, if we eat the crap that is presented here we are limiting our bodies nutrients and we are naturally going to eat more! That's how it works... simply feed the body what it needs and we will not continue to seek food.

My personal, tried and true, recommendations for travel...

Snacks are easy - raw nuts, organic fresh fruit, vegetables, nutriharmony whey protein or mrp formula, wild canned meats (salmon, tuna etc)

Meals are easy - If you're in a large city, there is always a decent place to get a healthy salad, find a Whole Foods or central market, or if you must do fast food Chipotle is decent in quality. The point is, sit down, take your time and don't 'drive through'. You can always use your snack options listed above as a meal.

And remember, you ALWAYS get what you pay for! It just might now pop up for another 20 years or so...

Again, health is what we are going for...

Just another article on Zen Habits that re-iterates what I truly believe. This is actually similar in some ways to a post I added a few days back. Would love to hear any feedback?

A Single Principle to Declutter Your Health

Eat less, and enjoy yourself.
Editor’s note: This is a guest from Brad Pilon, blogger and author of Eat Stop Eat.

We can’t control the future. I wish we could, but we can’t. There are simply too many variables and uncontrolled factors at play. Even the best-laid plans are no match for unforeseen circumstances.

Sure we all enjoy the security of attempting to predict, plan, and control our futures because it’s a way for us to attempt to reach our goals, but in reality this control is nothing more then an illusion.

A perfectly planned vacation can be ruined by the weather (out of your control), a flight cancellation (out of your control) or a sickness (again, out of your control). At some point we are going to fail while attempting to control the future in order to reach our goals.

In fact, when it comes to reaching our goals we fail ALL THE TIME. But this is perfectly all right because this is the only way we learn.

The problems arise when we fail to learn from our mistakes and overlook the big picture, and then grasp for even more control by concentrating on the little, small, and insignificant things that don’t really matter.

This desire to guarantee the future by controlling the small insignificant parts of our lives seems to be human nature, and this fact is extremely evident in the field of health and nutrition.

Think of the insignificant gimmicks that you’ve been told will help you drop
pounds:

* Eat breakfast every single day: If you don’t, your body goes into ’starvation mode’.
* Drink Coffee to speed up your metabolism
* Drink 12 glasses of cold water every day
* Eat protein for lunch
* Sip Green Tea all day
* Take your Fish Oil Pills every day.

In reality NONE of these things are going to result in significant or long lasting weight loss results.

Each one is either a misuse of scientific fact (confusing an association with causation), is an exaggeration (the ‘metabolism boosting’ effects of green tea or caffeine) or is simply repeating common myths as facts (protein for lunch).

And while the health marketers that push these info tid-bits may or may not mean well, convincing you to focus on the minor and mostly irrelevant tasks can not only prevent you from losing weight, it can also affect your health.

Successfully losing weight seems to be one of the most difficult life-problems to solve.

Yet it can be solved with one of the easiest solutions: Eating less.

Spending too much of your time concentrating on the insignificant parts in an attempt to control the future will cause you to lose sight of the big picture - In this case the big picture is that your body is perfectly capable of burning fat and losing weight without you needing to obsess and stress over learning how this happens.

The exact details are out of your control. Obsessing about them does not change them.

But if you continually try to control the things that are out of your control with the small insignificant part of your life, you end up spending almost all of your time obsessing about health, nutrition and fitness. Recording your meals in a spread sheet, twittering about how ‘healthy’ your breakfast was, spending an extra 5 dollars to have a 90 cent chicken breast added to your salad at lunch and fretting over the timing of your next meal.

Too much of this and you can end up in a very bad place: Spending every single waking moment of your life thinking, talking and stressing over your health.

And this is NOT healthy.

It’s nothing more than a mind full of insignificant health and fitness clutter.

In essence, by thinking that we can guarantee our future by controlling insignificant day-to-day things we end up sacrificing the enjoyment of our lives for some far off distant goal.

And remember, we can’t control the future, so we end up hopelessly grasping for control with more and more of the insignificant things, the ‘fluff’ and clutter.

And herein lies the big picture that we end up missing: Health is a lifestyle. It is a process. It is not a reward.

You should enjoy the process. It should be easy and sustainable. And in the best of situations, it should be mindless.

Enjoying the process means finding a simple and manageable way to enjoy eating less, and then eliminating the mind-clutter and the obsessive attachment to the insignificant little things. By doing this you eliminate the need to control the future, because you are enjoying the process.

The bottom line is that If you can’t sit down with a close friend for twenty minutes and have a good conversation WITHOUT talking about nutrition or your workouts, you need to take a step back and breathe.

Concentrate on getting the best results in the most comfortable and enjoyable way without worrying about the insignificant fluff.

Enjoy the process.

Living Without Force

“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond the winning.
Lao Tzu”

This can be applied to all aspects of our daily lives, but I want to focus on the ever-continuing pursuit of health and fitness. Being that these are extremely relative terms I want to explain a way to cultivate more of the two for each individual. Our society has taught many different ways or ideas regarding how we are to go about achieving these, whether it’s fad dieting, fad fitness or a combination of both. There is always a new gimmick on the market proposing to be the panacea to reaching your goals. While some of these things may or may not help, it’s important to realize that these things should be a lifelong journey that is continuously woven into our daily lives without force. We are taught from a young age to ‘try’ harder and we will be ‘better’. We are taught to force many things, overriding what our bodies are telling us in the name of health and fitness dogma. What happens is merely temporary, if that. As Dr. Dyer states “force creates a counterforce which goes on until there’s an all out battle”, which is true if you think about it. I see it often in my industry whether it’s in the form of injury or yo-yo dieting. Often times those who step out on that journey end up with much resentment and hostility and truly give up.
I am here to help promote a new philosophy or trend... a realization that it doesn’t have to be hard. We must first learn to cooperate with ourselves in order to succeed, and not compete. Start with baby steps, not to force, and to take the path of least resistance. Take action, big or small, knowing that you are on the way to creating the healthy life you want. As my business partner Craig Keaton says, “weight loss and performance are by-products of health and not the other way around.” Think about that for a second. It makes sense that when we strive for health and do not try to force weight loss etc, those things that we want are naturally going to occur.

Steps to create the healthy mind/body that you have always wanted –

-Eat ‘clean’ foods!
Wherever you are in the spectrum, start. Simply focus on taking small steps. Maybe that’s buying one more piece of organic fruit next time you’re at the store, or researching meat’s that are locally produced and grass-fed. Or it could be something as simple as reading this blog!

-Drink ‘clean’ water!
I would like to do a whole post on water, but you can start now by simply adding more filtered water to your diet. Or bodies are majority water, so it makes sense to get the best you can find. I prefer not to contribute to landfills with bottles but if that is your best alternative I recommend choosing reverse osmosis or artesian (fiji, evian etc). Spring water is always a decent alternative as well.

- Move your body

-Learn to relax
Take time to de-stress. Meditate, read a book, or go for a walk. It’s amazing how these simple things can improve our physiology.

FUN fitness!

You read the title correctly! Fitness CAN be fun again! Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't have to take place in a commercial fitness facility and it doesn't even require that you have much equipment. The only requirement is your willingness to move your body. This is where The Movement Dallas's RECESS class comes in. A new way that is guaranteed to revolutionize the way we 'workout'. Seriously, who is tired of squating to 20, lunging to 30 and doing pushups to exhaustion? I am! Don't get me wrong, these things definitely have their place but boredom sets in relatively quickly and the appeal just seems to dwindle. This is something I have gradually experienced more and more over the past 5 or so years. With a background in natural bodybuilding, at the time I never understood why people didn't lift more weights, and I'm talking the 'old school' way. Heavy benching, heavy squating, heavy deadlifting and lots of curls. Blah, blah, blah. It just doesn't do it for me anymore. I also understand why more people aren't involved in fitness. It's the misconception that it has to look a certain way and that it involves a heavy frown and no fun. I am here to say that is DOESN'T. I am here to say it can be all smiles and laughs all while breaking a nice sweat! Come join us this Saturday at 8a at Glencoe park for a FREE RECESS class to find out for yourself! I promise it will be an amazing workout, a great community of people and a wonderful way to bring out the kid in you.

Passion for quality...

I am passionate about quality food because I have seen it change MANY lives... including my own. If you're truly looking to pursue health, and everything that comes with it, look no further...

This is an extremely easy, healthy meal to put together that takes no time, and can even be prepared in advance.

Rotisserie chicken from Whole Foods
Veggies - sauteed onion, garlic, broccoli and red cabbage in oil (you can use coconut, olive or animal fat)
Hummus - mine was homemade but there are a number of great preservative/chemical free options on the market. Just make sure you can pronounce what you are reading :) For someone on a budget homemade is much cheaper!

And that's it. It literally took me 10 minutes to put together.
